If The Celtics Use The #17 Pick

I wrote about who I'd like the Celtics to take at #6.  It was a group of PFs as well as Marcus Smart.  If they keep the pick at 17 there appears to be a group of solid wing players available. Here are my four favorite that might be there.

JAMES YOUNG, SG/SF, KENTUCKY, FRESHMEN

Young has decent size for a wing at 6'6.  He, like all of the Wildcats, played real well at the end of the year and deep into the NCAA Tournament.  He's a great shooter, although his season numbers from 3 (35%) didn't back it up.  His shot looks smooth as hell though and I expect him to be even better in the NBA (like Bradley Beal).

T.J. WARREN, SF, NORTH CAROLINA STATE, SOPHOMORE

Best scorer in the ACC (25 ppg) last season.  Everyone projects Jabari Parker as the best scorer from this class, and that's fair, but Warren is not far off.  Not a great 3 point shooter but he's 6'8 and scores in a variety of ways, especially in the paint. Master of the floater.  If he develops an outside shot he could be scary good.  Played prep school ball at Brewster Academy in NH where he was teammates with Xavier PG Semaj Christon. (Good Pierre McGuire fact right there).

RODNEY HOOD, SF, DUKE, SOPHOMORE

I never like Duke players and this year I love two.  Hood is my pick for a player in this class to most likely compete in a 3-point Contest and a Dunk Contest.  Great shooter (42% from 3), size to play 2 and 3 (6'8.5, but not a great wingspan at 6'8.5).  He is also very athletic, so not just a shooter.  Keep an eye on him at the workouts.  Many project him in the 20s, that would surprise me.

K.J. MCDANIELS, SG, CLEMSON, JUNIOR

Like Noah Vonleh, great player whose team missed the NCAA Tournament.  Certainly not all his fault, but with 68 teams in the dance you'd like to see your star lead you there regardless of surrounding cast.  But this guy is legit.  6'6 with a freakish wingspan of 6'11.25.  Put up 17 points, 7 rebounds and nearly 3 blocks a game.  Dwyane Wade perhaps?  Hopefully more that than Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

I like all these guys.  If the Celtics don't make a move for Kevin Love and use their two picks, I'd be thrilled with 2 of the 8 players I mentioned.  It'd be a rebuild but with a bright future.

50 Cent's 1st Pitch Is Still Funny A Day Later

Julian Edelman's Burgertyme!

I'm a fan. What can't this little guy do? 100 catches? Check. 1,000+ yards? Check. Little cornerback action? Check. Punt return? Check. And now a Between Two Ferns like interview. Well played sir, well played.

Rich Reviews: X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the 7th film in the X-Men series following X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), X-Men: First-Class (2011), and The Wolverine (2013).

I've seen them all.  If they make 7 more, I'll see those too.  So, granted, I am partial to the X-Men.  But here are my thoughts on the latest from this great comic book movie franchise.

X-Men + Inception + The Terminator = X-Men: Days of Future Past

And I didn't even really like Inception.  But in this case, time travel was in place of dream travel to change the future.  This movie is all about time.  Just read the title out loud and try to figure it out without ending up in a mental pretzel.

The gist of the plot is the X-Men are in the future fighting Sentinels who are destroying mutants and the world.  They need to send someone back to the past in order to prevent these bad boys from being developed, thus changing how things shake up.  Terminator, Inception, etc., etc.

They've combined actors/characters from the original trilogy with actors/characters from the prequel and tried to make sense of it all.  Because of the number of characters and storylines some of it had to be left out.  But I found it hard to complain about too much.  Sure there are some plot holes and questions left unanswered, but the movie had a strong story, action, and everything else you look for in a comic book film, including some solid cameos.

The truth is, X-Men: The Last Stand was a mess, and they tried/needed to clean it up.  A lot of what you had here was dealing with that film and some of the hangups in this one are due to that one.  Make sense?

Bottom line, I enjoyed the hell out of it.  Very entertaining.  It has me thinking back to all the previous X-Men movies (sure some plot holes annoy me, but not enough to ruin it).  I liked it a lot more than Last Stand and both Wolverine films.  The other three movies were all great, and after just one viewing of Days of Future Past, this one is right up there.

I need to talk to someone who has seen ALL of these movies, and I need that right now.  Oh, like all Marvel movies, stay through the end credits for a little sneak peak.

Final Rating: 9/10

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Movie title is out.  Sweet little logo revealed.  And now we got less than 2 years until this bad boy is released... MAY 6, 2016.  Is Fandango taking reservations?  Should I put up a countdown clock?

If The Celtics Use The #6 Pick

Let's assume that Wiggins, Parker, Embiid, and Exum are all of the board in some order. The Jazz then pick at 5 and could go really in any direction.  They have Trey Burke but will likely still be in the market for best available, whoever they think that is. The C's should have a shot at three of these four players.

JULIUS RANDLE, PF, KENTUCKY, FRESHMEN

I like Randle a lot. He led the SEC in double-doubles (24). Not as long as Vonleh and not as athletic as Gordon but is an excellent rebounder, a trait that will automatically transfer into in the NBA. He can score around the hoop and mid-range.  Maybe it's because he's lefty and doesn't have a huge vertical but you can see Zach Randolph in his game.  That's 20-10 down the road.

AARON GORDON, F, ARIZONA, FRESHMEN

Big fan of Gordon.  One of the most athletic players in the entire draft (along with Wiggins and LaVine). He was a part of a great team at Arizona this year.  He can already guard multiple positions (Shawn Marion type).  He shot an embarrassing 42% at the free throw line last year but I trust he'll improve that.  His offensive game right now may remind you of Blake Griffin as a rookie (certainly not this year). He is also one of the youngest players in the draft. Upside for days.

NOAH VONLEH, PF, INDIANA, FRESHMEN

6'10 with a 7'4 wingspan and the 2nd biggest hands in the combine's history.  Wow.  He can shoot from the outside and rebound.  He's one of the few elite players in the draft who did not make the NCAA Tournament (K.J. McDaniels). Not all his fault but just noting it.  He could develop into a double-double guy and a rim protector.  Played prep school ball at New Hampton in NH which is fun.

MARCUS SMART, PG, OKLAHOMA STATE, SOPHOMORE

Another one of my favorite players in the draft.  He was not a point in high school and he returned for his sophomore year in part to work on it. Unfortunately for him, year two did not go that well.  He went from a Top 3 pick to likely at the end of the Top 10.  He pushed that racist Texas Tech fan and the Cowboys did not have a great year. He needs to shoot better and prove he's a PG.  He's only 6'2.5 but is stronger than any other guard in the draft. Could be solid in the post a la Billups, A. Miller, Parker, Kidd.  I also see some Westbrook and Rose in his game.

If the Celtics don't trade out they'll have some real good choices at #6.  I'll take a look at #17 and of course have a full two round mock draft between now and June 26.

They are much better than Lloyd's chances with Mary.

A reminder of the % per picks...

1st = 10.3%
2nd = 11.1%
3rd = 12%
4th = 0%

Kevin Love Available

With the news that Minnesota Timberwolves F Kevin Love will hit free agency next off season and is not interested in an extension with the T-Wolves, a handful of teams have emerged as potential landing spots in a trade, including the Boston Celtics.

The Rockets, Warriors, Bulls, and Lakers also appear to be players in this as well.

In order to offer up the biggest trade package possible we'll assume that he signs long term with the team that acquires him.

What the Celtics have to offer:
1st round pick TBD (lottery tomorrow, check out countdown below), it will be #1, #2, #3, #5, #6, #7, or #8.
#17 this year
All of their future #1's
Clippers #1 next year
Nets #1 2016 & 2018

Jared Sullinger
Kelly Olynyk
Avery Bradley (RFA)
Brandon Bass
Salaries (Anthony, Bogans)

What is the 25 year old All-Star worth?

How many 1st rounders do you need to include?  I'd be ok giving up anything besides a top 2 this year (Parker or Wiggins).  Embiid may go in top 2 then I'd take the other at 3.

But would you have to give a 1st this and maybe next plus Sullinger?  Still worth it.  Give them the worse pick between yours and the LAC next year.

Rondo + Love is good.  But they still need someone else to contend for a title.  Carmelo?  Pipe dream but why not dream big?

Going to be quite a month.

Your middleweight champ loses in a light heavyweight fight to a guy with 1 other win since 2006... In the 1st round. Probably not ideal.

No Eddie Alvarez hurt the card and then his replacement defeats Chandler.  Not ideal.

Dana White, who said he was watching boxing last night, enjoyed the whole thing I'm sure.

Countdown to the NBA Draft Lottery

Countdown Clock

Celtics own a 10.3% for the #1 pick.

I'll just be staring at this for a little while.

Teemu Selanne Calls it a Career

Ducks F Teemu Selanne played his last game in the NHL after 21 seasons.

More importantly he was one the very few active players who was in one of the greatest video games of all time. NHL 95 for SEGA.

He wasn't just in the game, he was one of the stars.

Teemu Selanne, F, Winnipeg Jets = 91 player rating

That's 3rd among wingers in the entire game.

1. Sergei Fedorov, Detroit Red Wings, 99
2. Pavel Bure, Vancouver Canucks, 94
3. Teemu Selanne, Winnipeg Jets, 91
4. Alexander Mogilny, Buffalo Sabres, 89
5. Jaromir Jagr, Pittsburgh Penguins, 87

Reche Caldwell Busted For Selling X

Bruins lose, bounced from playoffs.

Paul Pierce/ Kevin Garnett lose, bounced from playoffs.

Now this?  Former Patriots WR Reche Caldwell reportedly was arrested for trying to sell ecstasy. (according to TMZ)

Can't catch a break tonight.

Bruins Eliminated

Bruins lost Game 6 and Game 7 by a combined 7-1.  Awful.   The best team in the regular season goes down in the Conference Semifinals.

David Krejci playoff goals - 0
Brad Marchand playoff goals - 0

Zdeno Chara playoff goals FOR MONTREAL - 1

Gonna be tough to win with those odds.

NBA Draft Combine tomorrow!  I'm in.

Game 7! Let's Go!

Bruins-Canadiens Game 7 Odds

According to the fine folks at Bovada, the current odds for Game 7...

BRUINS (-175)

CANADIENS (+155)

If you want to go spreads

BRUINS (-1.5 = +155)
CANADIENS (+1.5 = -175)

Over/ Under = 5

Over = +105
Under = -125

I think the Bruins win a low scoring game and apparently so does Vegas.  I thought the under might get better odds considering the winning team has scored at least 4 goals in 5/6 games.  But it is a Game 7.

How many more hours til puck drop?

Ben Affleck Batman

(Director Zach Snyder tweeted this picture out.)

I was one of the only people in the world who didn't hate Daredevil, so I'm going to wait and see until I say Affleck sucks as Batman.  He's got to be better than Clooney right?

Daniel Bryan Needs Neck Surgery (?)

NO! NO! NO!

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan announced on Monday Night Raw that he needs neck surgery.  No clue if real life Daniel Bryan needs neck surgery or on screen Daniel Bryan needs neck surgery (or both?), but sounds like he will be out for awhile.

Stinks.  Either way this guy is "Stone Cold" "Hulk Hogan" like popular right now.  Hope he's not out for long.  If he vacates the title(s), who should get it (them).  (Note: the two belts for one title is a bit much, right?)

They would have to have a match for the vacant championship.  Who deserves the chance?

John Cena - always in the mix, but has a nice thing going with Bray Wyatt right now.

Cesaro - Paul Heyman guy, and he won that huge Andre the Giant trophy, so there's that.

Batista - he's here for a reason I suppose.

Randy Orton - no one likes him, but some solid heat if you put it back on him while Bryan is out.

Kane - he's a monster again, a monster wouldn't really want a belt, but if he got it it'd be hard to get it back.

Triple H - why not? really fire everyone up

Roman Reigns - if he's going to get a big push, put the belt on him, and keep the Shield with him to make it tough to take it back.

Those are the obvious choices.  Wade Barrett (intercontinental) and Sheamus (United States) are title holders right now, so maybe.

But you want my pick?

UPDATE: KANE JUST DRAGGED DANIEL BRYAN OUT ON THE STAGE TO BEGIN THE LAST HOUR OF RAW. LOOKING LIKE THAT NECK SURGERY THING MAY BE LESS LEGIT THAN ORIGINALLY THOUGHT. LEAST I DIDN'T SPEND A LOT OF TIME WRITING THE PREVIOUS POST. WWE IS WHACKY!

5 Best & Worst Patriots Draft Picks of the last 5 Years

The jury is still out (as they say) on most of these guys, especially those from the 2013 draft.  But as I see it these are the 5 best and 5 worst of the last 5 years.  Taking into account where they were picked and just how good or bad they were/are.

5 BEST

1. Rob Gronkowski (2010 - 2nd Round, 42 overall)
The injuries stink but he's the best TE in the NFL when he's on the field. Hard to beat in Round 2.

2. Julien Edelman (2009 - 7th Round, 232 overall)
He didn't get real good until after his rookie deal expired but still points for getting him in the 7th. 100 catch, 1,000 yards is nothing to sneeze at.

3. Sebastian Vollmer (2009 - 2nd Round, 58 overall)
Some injury concern but getting a solid, starting o-tackle in round 2 is impressive when most teams use Top 10 picks on them.

4. Nate Solder (2011 - 1st Round, 17 overall)
The pick they got from the Raiders for Richard Seymour.  Surprised they held on to it, but Solder seems legit.

5. Devin McCourty (2010 - 1st Round, 28 overall)
Pro Bowl CB as a rookie then a terrible CB and now a solid safety.  I'll take it.

5 WORST

1. Ras-I Dowling (2011 - 2nd Round, 33 overall)
The 1st pick of the 2nd round. Dubbed Ras-IR Dowling, he never played. (8 games). Awful.

2. Ron Brace (2009 - 2nd Round, 40 overall)
Did you know he played 39 games?  Me either.

3. Brandon Tate (2009 - 3rd Round, 83 overall)
He was picked 1 spot ahead of Mike Wallace.

4. Tavon Wilson (2012 - 2nd Round, 48 overall)
Surprised everyone. That's not always a good thing.

5. Patrick Chung (2009 - 2nd Round, 34 overall)
He wasn't the worst but after trading Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel you hoped for something better.

Honorable Mention Worst:
Darius Butler
Tyrone McKenzie
Jermaine Cunningham
Taylor Price
Ryan Mallett
Jake Bequette
Duron Harmon

And in a bizarre turn of events Aaron Hernandez probably belongs on both lists.  So I decided to just leave him off all together.

Picks du jour

Bruins (-140) & Kings (-140) parlay

Teddy Bridgewater (EVEN) to be picked ahead of Derek Carr

"You miss 100% of the shots you DON'T take.  -Wayne Gretzky"  -Michael Scott.

Lot of game left boys!

Tuesday's Picks

Trail Blazers win
Heat (-8)
Blackhawks (-1.5)

No clue on Bruins-Canadiens Game 3.

UPDATE:  1-2   Can't have everything.

NFL Draft Green Room

30 draft hopefuls will be in the house on Thursday night for Round 1 of the NFL Draft.  There are only 32 picks on night one, so I'm hoping a lot of these dudes got multiple nights in their hotel rooms.

That's a LONG night.   Even Aaron Rodgers and Brady Quinn didn't have to sleep over.  You think Teddy Bridgewater is thrilled with his decision?  (Hint: He won't be.)

But good luck to these gentlemen:

I should have posted this yesterday for the big "May the Fourth be with you" day, but here ya go.

NFL.com created Star Wars themed helmets for all 32 teams complete with locations, logos, and names.  I'd say the Pats made out pretty well.  They're better than their real helmets.

May The Fourth Be With You

Happy Star Wars day dorks.  The cast was recently announced for Episode VII, and color me intrigued.

Release Date: December 18, 2015

Any guesses for the title?

Maybe, Star Wars Episode VII: Better Than The Prequel Trilogy

Or

Star Wars Episode VII: Jar-Jar Died A Horrible Death, We Promise

So many great options.

WWE Extreme Rules

It's the first PPV after Wrestlemania, Extreme Rules.  Tonight starting at 7:30 with a WeeeLC match between Torito and Hornswaggle. (Little dudes)

Some big time matches on the card including my man Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena in a steel cage!

The Shield vs. Evolution

Daniel Bryan (c) vs. Kane

Cesaro vs. Rob Van Dam vs. Jack Swagger

Should be solid.

I'll be tweeting either at @Keefe21 or @TheSportsBrief haven't decided yet.

Both are great follows.
