#SmearCampaign

Our buddy Billy Lanni started a Nationwide trend today on twitter.  Jon Lester signed with the Cubs (and NOT the Red Sox), so Lanni knew it was only a matter of time until the smear campaign would be out in full force. (See the job on Terry Francona from a couple years back.) This is how it started... He continued with ones like this... The thing really took off, all day with this... Here were my contributions to the cause. You get the idea. And it's fun for the whole family!

Lester and Gomes to A's for Cespedes

Trade deadline day in the majors and after all the hype, Sox starter Jon Lester was dealt to the Oakland A's.

Complete deal:

Oakland A's Get:
Jon Lester
Jonny Gomes
$

Boston Red Sox Get:
Yoenis Cespedes
Competitive balance draft pick

Cespedes is a free agent after next season, so it's not as much of a slam dunk for the Sox as you might think.

MORE TRADE NEWS:

John Lackey to Cardinals for Allen Craig and Joe Kelly.

I'll have more tonight, hosting from 7pm-midnight on 98.5 The Sports Hub.

Red Sox 1 Win Away

Sox take a 3-2 World Series lead back to Boston for Game 6 Wednesday night.

Few quick thoughts:

David Ortiz is playing like a jacked up Barry Bonds right now.  If I'm St. Louis I hold the 4 up and walk him literally everytime. No questions asked.

Jon Lester has been filthy.  Just dominant.  2 World Series wins. And two outings of 7.2 when they needed it.

Koji Uehara is awesome.

Xander Bogaerts will be on my fantasy baseball keeper team until he retires.

John Lackey in Game 6? John Lackey in Game 6!

I'll be talking about it on The Sports Hub tonight 7pm-12am.

Your 2011 Halloween Costume

Every year you end up going to a costume party on Halloween. Even if you think you won't, you do. The keys to a great costume are simple.

1. Funny
2. Topical or Ironic or Whatever (Recognizable, you don't want to have to explain to everyone what the hell you are.)
3. Cheap (How much you need to spend on something you wear once?)
4. Ability to be Comfortable (Not Hot, Cold, etc.)
5. Ability to Drink/ Eat (Masks are an obstacle)

With all that being said, I think this year it's obvious. Go as Jon Lester or Josh Beckett or, if you are a mouth breather John Lackey.

What you need...

Sox Hat.

Sox Jersey of Shirt (player name optional).

Bud Lights. "Rally Beers."

Good Ole Fried Chicken. Popeye's if you can.

It's that easy. If you want to really play it up you can get some of those ridiculous necklaces that they all wear, and depending on which pitcher you choose, you can add details accordingly.

Happy Halloween

Quick thoughts on the Red Sox possibly trading for Halladay

I'm hearing that the package includes Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard and Casey Kelly. I can certainly deal with sending Buchholz. I think he'll be a very good major league pitcher, but to me he's still unproven at the Major League level. I said to my buddy Kevin last night that last year in the ALDS, Buchholz didn't start a game. In fact if they went to Game 4, it's not a given he would have gotten the ball. But if the Sox had Halladay, where would he have fallen into their plans? Well, he would've started Game 1. Over Lester, over Beckett. Enough said on that front.

With Bard, I'm okay sending him as long as Theo has a plan for Papelbon. If they are going to give him the big dollars he wants, make the deal. He's a top-3 closer in baseball. I have Rivera and Joe Nathan giving him a run for his money. Or if they foresee another free agent closer they'll pursue given Papelbon leaves, then that's okay.

But what I'm not okay with is dealing Casey Kelly. I don't care about how good he is as a baseball player. Look at the kid's girlfriend. Absolute smokeshow. How can you send her to Toronto like that? It's ludicrous. Take a look and judge for yourself. If I'm Theo Epstein, I'm telling the Blue Jays to either find another top prospect or I force Kelly to break up with her and then sign the chick to a lifetime contract as a player wife.

What do you think?
