Anderson Silva's Leg

WARNING: Graphic Pictures Below

Brutal night for Anderson Silva as he snaps his leg in the 2nd round of his title fight against champion Chris Weidman.   This could spell the end for the greatest fighter I have ever seen.

I went back and forth all week long and ultimately thought The Spider would get this win to set up a trilogy fight. But it was not to be.  He got dominated in the 1st round.  He looked better in the 2nd before snapping his leg in disgusting fashion.

Here are a few intense pictures.

Top 10 Christmas Movies All-Time

1. A Muppet Family Christmas (1987)
2. Christmas Vacation (1989)
3. Home Alone (1990)
4. Die Hard (1988)
5. Gremlins (1984)
6. Bad Santa (2003)
7. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
8. Elf (2003)
9. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
10. Black Christmas (1974)

Honorable Mentions:
Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
Frosty the Snowman (1969)

These were made for TV movies and that's the only reason they didn't crack the Top 10. Really a sub-category for these timeless classics.

Also a shoutout to Rocky IV as Rocky vs. Drago took place on Christmas Day.

Punter Gets In The Way Of An Athlete

That's just a big time block right here. Bengals punter Kevin Huber could have made the play, you got to eliminate him from the equation. Yes, he has a broken jaw and messed up vertebrae, but GET OFF THE TRACKS WHEN THE TRAIN'S COMING!.

Ok, he didn't see it. Fair. But if you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. Just run off the field after you kick the ball. Or kick it the hell away from Antonio Brown so he doesn't run it right past you and one of his teammates takes years off your life.

Enjoy these hits now, cause in 5 years there won't be special teams.

It'll still be in the NFL... NERF FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Freshen Up That Christmas Playlist

Less than two weeks until Christmas. You're all listening to Holiday tunes right now. Christmas in Hollis, Rudolph, Frosty, Grinch, White Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock and on down the line. But it's time to put this bad boy in the mix. From our buddy Opey!

M.I.T. Creates Ultimate Tongue Twister

Someone call Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as the geniuses over at M.I.T. have come together to create the trickiest tongue twister of all-time.  I for one, have no problem saying this, but if the folks at M.I.T. say it's tough, I'll pat myself on the back.

Can you say this?

Gremlins is a Top 10 Christmas Movie

Just picked up this bad boy from Target for $4.50.  I'm not sure what surprised me more, the price or the fact that I somehow didn't already own it.

But that fact remains, this is one of the best Christmas movies of all-time.  I'll come up with a complete list, but just know that Gremlins is on it.  It would also find itself on the list of best '80s movies and best creature movies.

$4.50?  You kidding me.  And it's "Special Edition."  Whatever that means.

Your Thanksgiving Day TV Schedule

It's perhaps the greatest day of the year.  Football, Food, Family.  Here is what you'll (I'll) be watching this Thursday.

9am-Noon: MACY'S DAY PARADE
Look for my favorites: Woody the Woodpecker and Spider-man.  Also Cam Neely and Mike Ritcher will be on a float promoting the next day's Bruins-Rangers game.

12-2pm: THE NATIONAL DOG SHOW
You can watch 30 mins uninterrupted of this bad boy before switching back and forth with what's next.  But who doesn't love a dog show?  Give me the Working Class every time.

12:30pm: Green Bay Packers @ Detroit Lions
Big NFC North match up here, but an even bigger fantasy football game.  Calvin Johnson, Reggie Bush, Matt Stafford, Eddie Lacy, Jordy Nelson, Jarrett Boytkin, and Matt Flynn?

4:30pm: Oakland Raiders @ Dallas Cowboys
Not the best game, but it's still football.  Maybe eat during some of this one.

8:30pm: Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens
Two disappointing teams go at it with playoff chances really on the line.  The winner is guaranteed anything but the loser is probably done.

9:30: Lady Gaga & The Muppets Holiday Spectacular
I'm no Lady Gaga fan, not even close.  But as you know, I'm in on anything Muppets.  Pair them with Stalin and I'm watching.  Hopefully it's not too much Gaga and friends.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM THE SPORTS BRIEF!

Celtics Fans Guide to Watching the 2013-14 Season

Brought to you by The Rich Keefe Project

How should Celtics' fans handle this bizarre season?  Root for a loss every night? Hope they make the playoffs?  Here is a friendly guide on how to "enjoy" this season.

  • Is Brad Stevens the coach for the future?  The former Butler coach signed at 6-year deal.  Does he have the respect of the players, do they play hard?
  • The development of the young players, Avery Bradley, Jared Sullinger, Kelly Olynyk, Vitor Faverani, MarShon Brooks.  Which guys do you want to keep, who should be traded?
  • Trade value of the vets: Gerald Wallace, Brandon Bass, Kris Humphries, Courtney Lee
  • Is Jeff Green a Top 3 player on a title team?
  • Competitive games, take the losses, but don't freak out with the wins... especially if it includes sticking it to LeBron James and Ray Allen
  • Scout the opponenets.  Who might be the next Garnett/Allen?  (Will the Blazers/T-Wolves be bad enough to trade Aldridge/Love?)
  • Get in on college basketball!  Watch Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, Arizona, etc.  Learn Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle, Jabari Parker, Andrew Harrison, Joel Embiid, Aaron Gordon, and the like so you have a strong opinion come June's Draft.

There you have it.  Good luck this year.

Jeff Green's Game Winner

Like it or not this was awesome.  I don't care if you want the Celtics to go 0-82, the face LeBron James makes after Green's buzzer beater was more than worth it.  For those of you who missed this on a Saturday night...

How Sincere Is This Mayor? How Poor Is His Tie Choice?

So apparently this Mayor of Toronto did crack.  He definitely wore an NFL tie to his apology press conference.  What the hell?  This is a direct slap in the face to the Argonauts and every self respecting Canadien.  Has to be his only tie right?

Let's put it on you, you have a high ranking job, and have just been busted for smoking crack.  You need to get out in front of this, put people at ease.  Grab your favorite American sports tie with all the logos (including the old-school Buccaneers and the highly debated Redskins) and shoe horn your fat ass into a suit, fake cry and boom, you should be set.  P.R. 101.

I still think a Maple Leafs tie would have been the way to go.  They go nuts for that team up there.  Good luck next term guy (do they do terms in Canada?)

Fantasy Brief

Week 9 is here.

"A lot goin on.  But there always is isn't there, a lot goin on."  -Ricky Slade, Made

Pick Ups:

Kenny Stills, WR, Saints (unless you drafted him like this guy.)

Mike Brown, WR, Jaguars

Saints D/ST

Alex Smith, QB, Chiefs

Terrelle Pryor, QB, Raiders

Percy Harvin, WR, Seahawks (if you're lucky enough to be in a league where everyone is clueless.)

Bounce back potential: Dwayne Bowe.  Bills give up a ton of WR points.  Bowe has been awful, roll the dice this week.

Remember to tune in tomorrow:

Is Jigsaw The Most Recent Horror Villain Icon?

You got the Big 3 of Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees. They've all been around for decades. Nearly 30 years for Freddy, longer for the other two.

If you want to throw out Norman Bates, Hannibal Lector, Leatherface, the Candyman and even little Chucky I'd be all for it. These are legendary horror movie villains.

Ghostface from Scream?  The symbol is sure, but it's always someone different.

Not gonna give you the Leprechaun. Nope.   I could be talked into Pinhead. But still that is less than 10 and they have all been around for awhile.

Speaking of awhile let's put Dracula and Frankenstein (or the Monster) in their own classic category.

Who is the newest legend?  I don't think it's close. Jigsaw.  The Saw movies were real good, especially the early ones.  And Jigsaw belongs in this group.  Hall of Famer.

Hope everyone had a great Halloween.  I'll chill out on the horror movie talk now.

Horror Franchises

If you have to rank all of the horror movie franchises what would your Top 10 look like?  You have to consider all of the films in the series, including the remakes and reimaginings (I think that's what they call it).  So even if a movie like Halloween (1978) is the best how much does that Busta Rhymes one or the Rob Zombie sequel hurt it?

Basically all horrors movies are part of franchises so it's all good.  I've been watching a bunch of horror movies this month so I wanted to throw out there the best series.  Did I already do this?  Probably. But here are the best franchises in order.

1. Halloween
2. Scream
3. Saw
4. Evil Dead
5. Romero's Living Dead
6. A Nightmare on Elm St.
7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
8. Silence of the Lambs
9. Friday the 13th
10. Final Destination

Red Sox Win 2013 World Series

John Lackey wins Game 6.

38-year old David Ortiz hits .688 in the series to be named World Series MVP.

Shane Victorino sits out Games 4 & 5 with a back injury only to come up with 4 RBI in Game 6.

Brandon Workman pitches a perfect 8th in Game 6.

I have now seen the Red Sox win 3 World Series titles.  The same number as my 92-year old grandfather.

What a season.

Now who do you bring back....

Red Sox 1 Win Away

Sox take a 3-2 World Series lead back to Boston for Game 6 Wednesday night.

Few quick thoughts:

David Ortiz is playing like a jacked up Barry Bonds right now.  If I'm St. Louis I hold the 4 up and walk him literally everytime. No questions asked.

Jon Lester has been filthy.  Just dominant.  2 World Series wins. And two outings of 7.2 when they needed it.

Koji Uehara is awesome.

Xander Bogaerts will be on my fantasy baseball keeper team until he retires.

John Lackey in Game 6? John Lackey in Game 6!

I'll be talking about it on The Sports Hub tonight 7pm-12am.

The World Series Is Not For Everyone

Nice at-bat by Brandon Workman in the 9th there skip. I also liked how you never used Mike Napoli.  And way to stick with a white hot Saltalamacchia.

All the attention is on that miserable bastard Jim Joyce and his call, but my heavens was John Farrell awful.  Just awful.

Rampage Jackson vs. Tito Ortiz NOT HAPPENING

Bellator PPV KO'd by Tito Ortiz neck injury.

In what was supposed to be the company's first ever pay-per-view event, pitting two aging, past their prime, albeit former UFC Champions Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Tito Ortiz.  Well a neck fracture suffered by the Huntington Beach Bad Boy has called it off.

Not only is the main event off but the PPV has been moved to Spike.  Tough stuff.  But this is why companys with small rosters can't survive (at any kind of UFC like level).  You put all your eggs in one basket and then it breaks and you have broken eggs... or something like that.

Sadly it's a fitting end to Ortiz

Biggest Accomplishment Ever?

I beat Grand Theft Auto V.  What a feeling.  All those hours of playing really paid off.  It honestly might be the best game ever.  All the GTA games have been sick, especially San Andreas.  But this one takes it to a whole new level.

The ability to play as 3 different characters who also team up on missions is what really separates this from the other games.  Well, that and the enormous environment, the no load times, and the limitless activities.

And even though I completed the main story and the final mission I still have side things to get done and the expansive online mode.  Can't wait.

I've dabbled in the online mode. Seems
like a good time.  Lots to do and you get your own unique character.  I'll be spending a lot of time on that in the near future.

Bottom line. GTA V = 10/10

MLB Player Wives and Girlfriends Own Twitter

I tweeted this after Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson was pulled after 1+ innings against the Red Sox in Game 4. Two days later, Hellickson's girlfriend, followed me on twitter. Well played Miss, well played. Solid follow up from this... @DallasLatos declined to come on the show. I would have shown her response, but sadly she has deactivated her twitter account... again. What can ya do? We still have the ALCS, NLCS, and World Series left to go, the wives and girlfriends have a ton of time to make it happen on twitter. We'll be waiting...

What Would The Celtics NBA Jam Team Be This Year?

Who do you take?  Let's say you get 3 dudes.  Rajon Rondo is an automatic.  After that?  You can make a case for a handful of guys: Avery Bradley, Jeff Green, Gerald Wallace (I guess), Kris Humphries (right?), Kelly Olynyk (1st rounder...), Jared Sullinger?  Here's the breakdown.

Well we can eliminate: Courtney Lee, Brandon Bass, MarShon Brooks, Keith Bogan, Phil Pressey, Jordan Crawford  (although he might be solid...)

Bradley- great defense, "steals" rating would be a solid 8 or 9.  He can hit that corner 3.  You'd be real small with him and Rondo.

Green- should be the best scorer, best athlete, makes sense.  I still don't like him.

Wallace- Would have been in the game for a few years during his career, not anymore.

Humphries- Rebounding an 8 or 9, would make for a solid duo with Rondo.

Olynyk- if the game gives him an above average 3pt shot, then he could be dangerous.  Plus you're going to need some rookies in the game.

Sullinger- As Chris Webber would say, Sullinger has that "old man game."  Do we want that here?  He had a solid rookie year before getting hurt.  He can rebound and his "2pt shot" would be strong.

Final Verdict:  Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green, Jared Sullinger

Horror Movie of the Night: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

You want to take a shower after watching this one. Ahead of it's time, Texas Chainsaw Massacre has inspired bascially every horror flick that involves a weird family, a crazy killer, slashers, out in the middle of no where, we're lost, and in-breeding. There has also been sequels and remakes (the sequels are awful (Renee Zellweger and Matthew McCounaughey are actually in one), while the remakes are worth a watch. Creepy meter is off the charts in this original though. Leatherface is gross. His family is gross. But the movie is terrific.

Horror Movie of the Night: Wrong Turn (2003)

Your horror movie of the night is the sneaky good Wrong Turn. This flick was released 10 years ago and has spawned a bunch of sequels. A basic enough plot, 6 people lost in the woods of West Virginia, and yes those people from Deliverance are real, perhaps even worse in this rendition.  I remember watching this in the theater and thought it was solid then and have seen it a few times since and it's still good.

Some classic horror movie stuff in it but it's never boring with a satisfying ending.  Plus these two are in it...

Top 10 Tuesday: Horror Movie Franchises

With it being October 1st why not get it going with some Horror Movie stuff?  Not sure what the definition of a movie "franchise" is but let's say it has to have at least 3 movies.  That works.  So this list takes in to account every movie in the series, keep that in mind as you enjoy it.  For example Silence of the Lambs is a terrific movie, but the rest in the batch, no so much. (I also don't include Alien or Jaws as Horror)

Honorable Mention: Child's Play, Candyman, Feast, Wrong Turn, Final Destination

10. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

9. Friday The 13th

8. Silence of the Lambs

7. Psycho

6.A Nightmare on Elm St.

5. Saw

4. Night of the Living Dead

3. Evil Dead

2. Scream

1. Halloween

Keefer Madness: Horse Edition

The Colorado Rockies gave 1B Todd Helton a 6-year old horse.  Kansas City Chiefs S Eric Perry is terrified of horses.  You can make this stuff up.  These were also the kind of stories we had in mind when we came up with Keefer Madness

Keefer Madness: Mariano Rivera Farewell Tour

Mariano Rivera has been soaking it all in around every MLB park.  He's received a ton of thoughtful gifts and over the weekend Metallica was at Yankee Stadium to play a live rendition of "Enter Sandman."  We covered the whole thing in Keefer Madness while getting a big assist from WFAN's morning show, "Boomer & Carton."

Top 10 Tuesday: Nintendo Games

Now this is a very difficult Top 10, perhaps the most difficult.  Nearly impossible to rank, but we are going to try it anyway.  So many classics, so few spots.  And depending on the day I could make a strong case for any of my top 3 to be the best game all-time. Here goes nothing...

Honorable Mentions: Double Dragon II, Track & Field (with pad), Maniac Mansion, Arkanoid, Blades of Steel, Paperboy, RBI Baseball, Adventure Island

10. Jaws

9. Super Mario Bros. 2

8. Contra

7. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest

6. Little League Baseball

5. Tecmo Super Bowl

4. Super Mario Bros.

3. Mega Man 2

2. Super Mario Bros. 3

1. Mike Tyson's Punch Out

I know I'm missing a few gems, but if I could only play 10 games for Nintendo ever again, I think they would be the ones.

Breaking Bad: Best Show Ever?

It has a chance.  2 episodes left in one of the all-time great TV dramas.  Can it be better than The Wire?  Can any show be better than The Wire?  Well, if it's going to be any show it should be this one.  I, like all of us, will have to watch the final two episodes before making that final ruling.  Because saying a show is the best ever is the single greatest complement you can give a show.

What Breaking Bad and The Wire have in common is they never waste time.  No story line or character is there for mere filler.  The creator, writers, directors, and even actors are all working towards something, and it's obvious.

Maybe I will do a full Breaking Bad vs. The Wire  blog in a few weeks, but for now, I just wanted to throw it out there.

Also as for BB, I'm starting to wonder how differently we'd be watching these episodes this season without all the flash-forwards.  So many times Walt could have been killed, but we know it doesn't happen, at least not yet.  I kinda like it, I kinda don't.  Either way, like last week, I can't wait til Sunday.

Jets Old Logo/ Uniforms Were Better

The Jets are awful. Their uniforms are just as bad.  I have no use for these. However their old helmets?  Not bad.

Throwback Thursday: 98 King of the Ring

In honor of Jim Ross announcing his retirement yesterday we go wrestling in Throwback Thursday.  The 2nd best bracket style competition (now that Pride is extinct).

It's King of the Ring.  Here is how it shook out back in 1998.

Top 10 Tuesday: Movie Sequels

Here are the 10 best movie sequels of all-time.  Only sequels to an original film are considered.  So no "sequels of a sequel" on this list, if it's part of a series it has to be the second.  With so many great sequels to choose from like Hangover 2, Iron Man 2 and Jurassic Park 2 it was really hard to find just 10.

Honorable Mention: Scream 2, Halloween II, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Batman Returns, Aliens, Bad Boys II

10. Blade II (2002)

9. Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995)

8. X2 (2003)

7. American Pie 2 (2001)

6. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

5. Die Hard 2 (1990)

4. The Devil's Rejects (2005)

3. The Godfather: Part II (1974)

2. Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back (1980)

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

Keefer Madness: Seinfeldcast

The same dude that brought us "Wrestlecast" last week was back at it again.  This time, Adam Lefkoe of WHAS 11 in Louisville went with the greatest TV comedy of all time.  It was real and spectacular.

Goldust Back On Raw? Goldust Back On Raw!

Clearly they can bring back any WWF guy from the 90s and it is a good thing in my book.  Even this piece of work.  Goldust was a classic.  Why not?

Oh, also one of my favorites from all-time, Edge, is back as well.  ("You think you know me, you know me?")

Two Monday Night Football games, Old school guys on Monday Night Raw, and a nice little Bruins doc on NESN (I'll catch it later.)  That is one hell of a TV night.

Keefer Madness: The Hoff vs. Sam Jackson

Thursday night's Keefer Madness was all about a potential feud between Baywatch star David Hasselhoff and Jules Winnfield himself Samuel L. Jackson.  Who is the real Nick Fury?

2013 NFL Predictions

The 2013 NFL season kicks off tonight. Here is how I think the final standings will play out.

And it's with pictures!  Reading is the worst.

AFC (playoff teams facing right)

NFC

Crushed it.

Throwback Thursday: College Football '96 for SEGA

This was one of the great SEGA football games going.  I remember using Ohio State a lot, which is strange because don't like them... at all.  I always rooted for Florida State growing up (big Charlie Ward, Warrick Dunn fan.)  But I played with the Buckeyes.  The reason?  Simple, Eddie George and Terry Glenn were unreal.  And even Bobby Hoying wasn't trash.   Solid backup team was USC, Keyshawn Johnson was a monster and caught everything.

Great game!  And look, 108 teams!  (Seriously though, that was crazy badass at the time, it took me forever to pick who to play with.)

Keefer Madness: Name Dropping Old WWF Stars

A sports anchor dude in Louisville thought he would spice up his highlights by mentioning as many old wrestlers as possible.  This clip has made the rounds on the world wide interwebs, and Keefer Madness was no exception.

Job well done sir.

Top 10 Tuesday: Batman Villains

Time to start up a weekly segment here on The Brief.  Top 10 Tuesday.  Is it the most original thing?  No.  Are lists something a 3rd grader could do?  Yes.  But people like rankings and it's easy to argue someone's list.  So for as long as it lasts, I present, Top 10 Tuesdays: Batman Villains.  (I don't consider Catwoman a villain, just too friendly with Batman.)

Honorable Mention: Hush, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Holiday, Victor Zsasz

10. Calender Man

Julian Day committed crimes based on significant days/ holidays on calender, hence the name.  It may seem corny, but in the graphic novel The Long Halloween, Calender Man basically played the role of Hannibal Hector.

9. Bane

I didn't love The Dark Knight Rises.  Bane, however is one of the best bad guys to mess with Batman.  Brains and Bronze with the voice of an underwater Sean Connery, what's not to like?  Oh and he also broke the Bat.

8. Ra's al Ghul

His daughter Talia, could probably also be on this list.  Ra's is the leader of the League of Assassins, and one of Batman's toughest foes.  He was the perfect villain in Batman Begins and I'm pretty sure he is everything proof.

7. Scarecrow

Dr. Jonathan Crane.  He was a great addition to the Christopher Nolan trilogy.  He uses a lot of drugs and toxins to mess with the minds of whomever.  Lot of toxin-wielding villains in Gotham City.  Toxins.

6. The Riddler

I have always enjoyed, Edward Nigma aka The Riddler.  Who doesn't love riddles, puzzles, and word games?  Throw in a sweet green suit, question marks, and a cane... that's a villain!

5. The Mad Hatter

Is Jervis Tetch a rip off of an Alice in Wonderland character?  Of course he is.  But he's a real sick-o.  Another dude who relies on mind-control devices.  Dare I say toxins?  He's obsessed with the Lewis Carroll book and is a genius.  He needs to be in one of these 13 Ben Affleck movies.

4. Two-Face

D.A. Harvey Dent was a guy fighting for Gotham.  WAS.  A court room incident (in the comic storylines) turned him into one of the best villains of all-time.  The coin flip is bad ass and where does he get those suits?

3. Poison Ivy

Pamela Isley is all about the toxins.  She can also control plants.  You wouldn't think that would be very helpful, but turns out it works for her.

2. Harley Quinn

Dr. Harleen Quinzel was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum where she was working with The Joker and boom she falls in love with him and goes nuts.  Great idea.  She started on the animated TV series, was worked in the comics and is probably at her best in the video games such as Batman: Arkham City.

1. The Joker

Couldn't be anyone else.  The most famous villain in all of comics.  The Joker is the best.  Whether it's old school Adam West Batman, or Jack Nicholson and of course Heath Ledger.  Check out the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke if you want an origin story for the greatest villain all-time.
